Linear stepper motors
H2W TECHNOLOGIES, SANTA CLARITA, CALIF. The company’s 2-phase or 4-phase linear stepper motors generate up to 12 lbs. (53 N) of continuous force and travel up to 80 inches (2 meters) per second. Resolution, which is determined by the driver, can be as accurate as 0.00004 in. or 12 micrometers. They are available with a solid or hollow hard-chrome track in lengths up to 144 inches (3.65 meters). The single-axis linear steppers have a forcer [motor], air bearings, side guide bearings, and track integrated into a compact, low-profile package. The forcer connects to a motion control system via flying leads or D connector. Multiple forcers can operate on a single platen at the same time. Linear steppers can also be custom designed.

Data acquisition module
OMEGA ENGINEERING INC., STAMFORD, CONN. The PT-104 is a 4-channel, temperature data acquisition module for use with Pt100 and Pt1000 RTD sensors. This high accuracy and high resolution unit measures temperature, resistance, and voltage. No power supply is required. This CE-compliant unit uses an RS-232 or USB interface. Windows software is included for basic data acquisition and display. The manufacturer recommends the module for chemical, water, and food industries, and especially for applications involving HVAC or laboratory use. Price starts at $660.

Tapper for EDM
HIRSCHMANN ENGINEERING USA, INC., SCHAUMBURG, ILL. EDtapper is a tapping unit designed for use with sinker electrical discharge machining. When it is added to the RAM of the EDM sinker machine it can add a tapped/threaded hole into hardened steel. No lead screw is necessary. The EDtapper converts the machine’s two-axis vertical movement to an orbital movement. The EDtapper has up to 3.2 mm (1/8-in.) horizontal movement in 0.02 mm (0.001-in.) increments. There is a flexible hose for spraying fluid directly through the electrode for blind threads. Set-up time for the EDtapper is five minutes. Two positions for electrode attachment are available: orbital fixed angular movement for threads, and orbital and rotating about its axis for circular symmetrical shapes.

 Flush-mount fastener
PENNENGINEERING, DANBORO, PA. The PEM SpotFast steel fastener is designed to permanently adjoin metal sheets to plastic panels or PC boards. Intended as an alternative to rivets and adhesives, the fastener installs on the top metal sheet, and flush or sub-flush with the bottom panel. The steel fastener allows the top metal sheet to rotate freely between the fastener head and plastic or PC panel. The design includes two separate clinch and knurl joining profiles, where the fastener is squeezed into place by punch and anvil, permitting a cold-flow of the metal sheet material into the fastener’s clinch profile and a broaching fit of the knurled end into the panel. The fasteners are available in various head and diameter measurements, and can be used with metal sheets as thin as 0.031 in. (0.8 mm) with a hardness of 80 or less on the Rockwell “B” scale.

Bearing protection ring
BALDOR ELECTRIC CO., FORT SMITH, ARK. Baldor is offering an optional bearing protection ring available for factory installation on its motors. The Aegis SGR bearing protection ring, manufactured by Electro Static Technology of Mechanic Falls, Maine, safeguards motor bearings from shaft currents generated by adjustable speed drives. The rings are designed to moderate adjustable speed drive circulating currents and prolong bearing life. Electro Static Technology has guaranteed that, when the ring is installed properly, any new motor up to 100 hp (75 kW) will not fail from electrical bearing fluting damage for the lifespan of the motor.

Zener diode barrier
TURCK, MINNEAPOLIS. The new MZB series Zener diode barrier limits excess energy before it reaches a hazardous area. If an electrical fault (such as an overvoltage) occurs in the non-hazardous region of the barrier, the Zener diodes restrict the voltage available to the hazardous area circuits, while the series resistance regulates the current. The circuit contains a fuse designed to rupture should excess energy continuously applied to the barrier exceed the design criteria for the loop. The design includes removable terminals with 6.33 mm-wide channels, each fitted with two stages of pulse-tested Zener diodes and a terminating resistor. The MZB series features a bussed power feed, and offers both relay and solid-state switch models.

 Direct-drive compressors
KAESER COMPRESSORS, FREDERICKSBURG, VA. The company has introduced a new line of DSD direct-drive series rotary screw compressors. These true direct-drive compressors feature Kaeser’s Sigma Profile air end connected directly to the motor, patent-pending Sigma Control system, and one-to-one direct-drive technology. The compressors also include remote grease fittings for the drive and fan motor. The company’s air flow design aims to reduce noise levels while cooling the unit. All units are available in flows from 424-1,024 cfm, and pressures up to 217 psig, and come equipped with a high-efficiency separator system.
