PASSED BETWEEN

Capability:
Users can export MapleSim models into Simulink via the MapleSim Connectivity Toolbox. The toolbox automatically converts models into S-function blocks for inclusion in Simulink diagrams. MapleSim is a multi-domain modeling and simulation tool, as is Simulink. The latter is used for the design of dynamic and embedded systems. Through use of an analysis tool and the documentation tool included with the toolbox, engineers are able to better understand and more easily reuse their models.

Hardware: PC running Windows, Linux, or Macintosh OS X.

Developer: Maplesoft, 615 Kumpf Dr., Waterloo, Ontario, N2V 1K8 Canada; (519) 747-2373; fax (519) 747-5284; www.maplesoft.com.

Cost: $995.

DRAFTING FOR FREE

Capability:
DoubleCAD XT is an AutoCAD LT work-alike that features drafting and detailing functions. The application may be useful at AutoCAD shops that need an extra seat of AutoCAD LT. It works like AutoCAD LT and includes features like self-healing, self-aligning blocks, advanced handle-based editing, snap prioritization, a brush editor, and smart dimensions. Also included are line, arc, and circle tools that automatically create tangent, parallel, and perpendicular entities without snaps. The tools allow users to proceed without resetting snap modes. The application is drawing file compatible and also imports all Google SketchUp geometry, layers, and components. It also converts SketchUp components to DoubleCAD blocks.

Hardware: PC running Windows 2000, XP, NT, or Vista.

Developer: International Microcomputer Software Inc. (IMSI), 75 Rowland Way, Novato, CA 94945; (415) 878-4000; fax (415) 897-2544; www.turbocad.com.

Cost: Free.

COMPOSITE ANALYSIS

Software Exchange - Helius:MCTCapability: The composite analysis solution Helius:MCT gives engineers the capability to design composite structures and to simulate and analyze complex composite materials. The solution is based on the multicontinuum analysis technique for composite structures, which decomposes the stress and strain fields of a composite material into stress and strain fields for the fiber and matrix components. The technique allows users to understand the sources of structural level behavior and to predict initiation and progression of material damage.

Hardware: PC running a finite element analysis system with which Helius:MCT is integrated.

Developer: Firehole Technologies Inc., 210 S. Third St., Suite 202, Laramie, WY 82070; (307) 460-4763; www.fireholetech.com.

Cost: $5,000 to $12,500.

CAD LITE

Capability: AutoCAD LT is 2-D CAD design software with drawing file format compatibility. New in the most recent update is a ribbon interface, menu browser, and enhanced layer dialog. Users can couple 2-D drafting enhancements with existing CAD features like dynamic blocks and annotation scaling.

Hardware: PC running Windows 2000, XP, NT, or Vista.

Developer: Autodesk Inc., 111 McInnis Pkwy., San Rafael, CA 94903; (415) 507-5000; fax (415) 507-5100; usa.autodesk.com.

Cost: Around $1,200.

USE AND LEARN

Capability: VX 2009 is a CAD and computer-aided manufacturing product that features a built-in learning system, Show-n-Tell. With the 3-D system, users can learn CAD and CAM at their own pace. The application’s authoring tools have been enhanced to make it easier for users to create design review and assembly instruction documents directly in VX. New 3-D ballooning and text tools allow users to choose font, color, and border style and to lock balloons to screen locations or directly to their models.

Hardware: PC running Windows XP or Vista.

Developer: VX Corp., 907 E. Strawbridge Ave., Suite 200, Melbourne, FL  32901; (321) 676-3222; www.vx.com.

Cost: $995 to $10,000.
