Transverse winding drive
AMACOIL, ASTON, PA. Optional PLC-controlled sensors mounted on the recently introduced Amacoil/Uhing traverse drive system detect the spool flange and send a signal to a pneumatic switch which activates the reverse level on the winding drive. This is a time-saving improvement over other models, the company says, since they require an operator to manually turn the reverse lever when the traverse hits an end stop. In addition, winding accuracy is expected to improve since the optic sensor is expected to be more sensitive than the human eye in detecting the spool flange edge. The company also offers a version where the spool flange diameter is programmed into the system to facilitate fast spool changeover. In this model, the sensor is not affected as the material being spooled builds up on the core.

Vibration calibrator
THE MODAL SHOP, CINCINNATI, OHIO. Compliant with the ISO 17025/A2LA requirements, the 9100C Portable Vibration Calibration System from The Modal Shop is a self-contained unit equipped with its own rechargeable power source, making it useful for testing in the field. The unit calibrates vibration sensors and proximity probes, providing a user-defined reference signal of displacement, velocity, and acceleration, This makes it suitable for calibrating sensors over wide frequency and amplitude ranges, and it produces NIST-traceable reports, according to the company. The calibrator is designed to have a rugged suspension, so that the unit can support sensors that weigh up to 750 grams without the aid of an external support mechanism. Noncontact displacement sensors can be tested for accuracy, linearity and frequency response using an optional S4A-1 proximity probe mounting attachment. As a measure to ensure accuracy, the 9100C applies vibration to both the sensor under test and an internal integrated NIST-traceable reference accelerometer, mounted within the unit’s electromagnetic shaker.

Pushbutton
EAO SWITCH CORP., MILFORD, CONN. Intended to offer a fresher look for industrial applications, EAO’s Series 84 “halo illumination” pushbuttons come in three styles: halo diffused lenses, units with halo illuminated switch bezels, and an animated illuminated bezel version. This last option allows for chasing LED sequences, multi-color illumination, partial bezel illumination, and other effects. The company says that the high-visibility glow created by the halo effect makes for a more effective interface that attracts attention to a primary function of the switch. In all Series 84 pushbuttons, light is emitted around the edges of the lens by a 3 mm high-intensity LED. Lenses and LED’s are available in a variety of colors, including red, yellow, green, white, and blue. Mixing of lens colors and LED options is encouraged by the company to provide custom appearances. The switches are oil- and watertight, which make them suitable for equipment that requires frequent washing.

Gear Replaces Pulley
INTECH CORP., CLOSTER, NJ. By replacing a complex pulley system with an Intech gearset, Dexter Magnetic Technologies improved the reliability of a robotic manipulator used to coat computer hard drives. The manipulator consisted of two independent pulley drives, each using two single-sided timing belts. The faster of the two belt drives required frequent tensioning to prevent belt stretching and wear. Intech’s solution used two stainless steel drive gears with Intech’s Power-Core idler gear, which combines a proprietary backlash-free plastic gear wrapped around a stainless-steel core to maximize load carrying capacity. A special idler gear shaft enabled the company to retrofit existing units in the field. The modification also boosted drive efficiency by 15 percent.

Custom airshafts
NIMCOR INC., NASHUA, N.H. The company says it custom fits every airshaft it makes for customers because each winding operation places unique demands on core shaft performance. Engineers calculate specifications for every airshaft order based on each customer’s application, then archive each plan should the customer ever place a repeat order or need details about a previous purchase. Roll size, weight and suspended distance continually require engineering decisions regarding shaft deflection and rigidity. Roll weight and fastest operating speeds influence the need for self-centering designs and the size, style, and number of gripping lugs or buttons. Shaft journals must be machined for an exact fit and are sometimes hardened to serve as load-bearing surfaces. Airshafts are available in steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and lightweight carbon fiber composite.
