ASME's Critical Priorities

Over the course of the past year, ASME’s Board of Governors has identified three critical areas where the organization is poised to leverage the expertise of its members—as well as its rich and diverse products, services, and programs—to play a leadership role on matters of global impact.

The three priority areas are energy, global impact, and engineering workforce development.

The Society’s role in these areas is based on several factors. Foremost is the inherent role of ASME, which is to help the global engineering community develop solutions to real-world challenges confronting it.

Founded in 1880 as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASME is a not-for-profit professional organization that enables collaboration, knowledge sharing, and skills development across all engineering disciplines, while promoting the vital role of the engineer in society.

This role is based on the Society’s Mission and Vision, and the organization’s Core Values.

Mission: To serve our diverse global communities by advancing, disseminating, and applying engineering knowledge for improving the quality of life; and communicating the excitement of engineering.

Vision: ASME will be the essential resource for mechanical engineers and other technical professionals throughout the world for solutions that benefit humankind.

In fulfilling its mission, ASME adheres to the following Core Values:

• Embrace integrity and ethical conduct.

• Embrace diversity and respect the dignity and culture of all people.

• Nurture and treasure the environment and our natural and man-made resources.

• Facilitate the development, dissemination, and application of engineering knowledge.

• Promote the benefits of continuing education and of engineering education.

• Respect and document engineering history while continually embracing change.

• Promote the technical and societal contribution of engineers.

The implementation of the Mission and Vision is far reaching. It includes the development of codes, standards, and other publications, conferences, education, and professional development programs. These all provide a foundation for advancing technical knowledge and a safer world.

In identifying three ambitious areas of focus, the Board of Governors took a long-term perspective. ASME will continue its work in other areas, certainly, but it will do so while coalescing activities within the areas of energy, global impact, and engineering workforce development.

In energy, ASME will serve as an essential energy technology resource and leading advocate for balanced energy policies. Specifically, ASME will serve as an essential energy technology resource for business, government, academia, practicing engineers, and the general public, and as a leading energy policy advocate for balanced energy policies in the U.S. and other areas of the world.

In the area of global impact, ASME will deliver locally relevant engineering resources to advance public safety and quality of life throughout the world. Specifically, ASME will provide locally relevant standards, certification, technical information, networking, and advocacy for business, government, academia, and practicing engineers to positively impact the quality of life throughout the world.

In engineering workforce development, ASME will achieve a broader, competent, vibrant, and more diverse engineering workforce for all career stages. Specifically, the Society will expand the capacity and effectiveness of the engineering workforce, promote the public good, and increase public awareness of the value of the engineering profession.

THE NEXT STEPS…

The Board, along with its planning committees and staff, is aligning this strategic roadmap with its operational objectives and creating targets and measures.

Teams of volunteers and staff are developing plans to implement the Board’s strategic plans and have been deploying its most precious resources—the talents and experience of its members—toward significant, tangible efforts in the target areas.

Even more than ambitious, ASME’s efforts are exciting. This is an exciting time in the history of the Society, and a stimulating time to be a part of it.
