New Products

Incremental encoders

SICK STEGMANN INC., DAYTON, OHIO. DFS 60 incremental encoders come in fully programmable versions to accommodate any value from 1 to 65,536 pulses per revolution—something no other encoder in the market today can claim, according to the company. With the help of a simple programming tool, users, system integrators, and distributors are able to select any number of lines between 1 and 65,536 via their PC or notebook computer. They are also able to set the zero pulse width to 90, 180, or 270 degrees and program the electrical interface to either HTL or TTL. The DFS60 is a universal device for determining angles, positions, speeds, and accelerations in automation technology.

General-purpose ac motor

AUTOMATIONDIRECT, CUMMING, GA. The IronHorse general-purpose ac motor line now includes the industrial-duty cast-iron C-face style. Available in 1 to 100 hp, all motors have a base speed of 1,800 rpm and are electrically reversible. The TC frame TEFC motors feature ribbed cast-iron frames to ensure maximum cooling. Starting at $130, these motors are useful in conveyor, pump, fan, and textile processing applications.  IronHorse general-purpose motors come with a two-year warranty.

Knife gate valve

RED VALVE CO. INC., CARNEGIE, PA. The Series DX slurry knife gate valve is designed especially for heavy slurry applications in the power and mining industries. When the Series DX valve opens, the reinforced elastomer sleeves seal against each other and provide a 100 percent full port opening, minimizing turbulence, which in turn minimizes wear. The seats isolate and protect all metal parts of the valve from coming in contact with the process. When the valve is closed, the sleeves provide a drop tight seal. Another feature of this valve is its ability to provide drop tight shutoff in both directions. Each time the Series DX valve strokes, it is designed to discharge a small amount of slurry out of the valve, keeping the gate path and seat area clear of entrapped particulates.

Force and torque sensor

ATI INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION, APEX, N.C. The Network Force/Torque (Net F/T) sensor system measures six components of force and torque (Fx, Fy, Fz, Tx, Ty, Tz). It has an EtherNet/IP and CAN bus communication interface, and is compatible with standard Ethernet. The Net F/T’s interface (Net Box) is sealed to IP65 (water splash-proof), and its transducer and cable can be sealed to IP68 (submersible in fresh water to 10 meters). The system can store transducer calibrations. Output rates can be as high as 7,000 Hz for six axes of measurement over Ethernet (using UDP). The user can program the system threshold to monitor force and torque and allow immediate action in case of critical process conditions. According to the company, each F/T transducer has hardware temperature compensation to stabilize its sensitivity over a range of approximately ±25 ºC above or below room temperature.

Smart network switch

EMERSON PROCESS MANAGEMENT, AUSTIN, TEXAS. The company’s new line of smart network switches is specifically designed to plug and play within a DeltaV digital system network. These switches come completely preconfigured to work within the DeltaV network, requiring no setup of the switching functions by the user. In addition, they provide an easy-to-use security feature to help prevent unauthorized network connections to the switch. Emerson’s new smart switches contain software specifically designed to provide switch monitoring capabilities and security features for the DeltaV system. They use patent pending Emerson “one-click lockdown” software for these security functions. DeltaV switches provide megabit and gigabit speeds over wired and fiber communications.

Locating and locking

JERGENS INC., CLEVELAND, OHIO. The Ball Lock mounting system is a quick-change system for metalworking and metal-forming operations, and works in horizontal or vertical machining centers. With the current trend toward smaller production runs, the ability to set up quickly for the next run has become critical. The mounting system speeds accurate locating and locking of fixture plates to subplates, freeing machine time by providing quick-change capability. Repeatability is ±0.0005 in., which minimizes or eliminates the need to indicate fixture position. The Ball Lock system holds plates together with working loads up to 20,000 lbs., achieving its holding force by a combination of force generators. A threaded screw exerts force onto a center ball, which, in turn, directs this force onto three balls that register on a taper seat. Jergens vises and tooling columns are available with Ball Lock mounting systems, and various pre-engineered kits are offered for many common machining centers.

Mechatronic toolkit

DANAHER MOTION, SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. According to the company, MechaWare 3.0 is the industry’s only mechatronic toolkit that seamlessly integrates mechanical systems and control software design. This results in faster design cycles, superior motion system performance, and faster time to market, the company says. Designed as a special purpose “toolkit” for motion system design, MechaWare enables software and mechanical engineers to work together to design, test, and modify custom motion algorithms in a fraction of the time and cost of conventional methods. MechaWare 3.0 includes comprehensive capture, logging, and visualization tools that allow mechanical, I/O, and software data to be integrated into one measurement environment, making interpretation and optimization of machine performance easier.

New Products - Motor-mounted speed controlMotor-mounted speed control

BISON GEAR, ST. CHARLES, ILL. The new TightDrive is a speed control for permanent magnet dc motors that puts the control directly onto the motor. According to Bison Gear, most PMDC gearmotors and motors used in industry require speed controls, and typically, the control is separate from the motor and wired through a cable system, which adds cost and complications to the installation. Bison says its voice-of-the-customer research discovered a need for a point-of-use motor speed control that was robust for industrial environments. The new TightDrive speed control can be field mounted on Bison PMDC gearmotors up to 1/6 horsepower (124 W) and offers a 20:1 speed range with maximum output of 90 V. The TightDrive is housed in a durable aluminum extrusion which offers NEMA 1 (IP 30) protection and superior heat dissipation. Speed is controlled with a combination on/off switch and speed potentiometer.

Plastic barbed fittings

NEWAGE INDUSTRIES INC., SOUTHAMPTON, PA. Thermobarb plastic barbed fittings are available in nylon, polyethylene, PVDF, and polypropylene for multi-use or single-use applications. NewAge says they are used by laboratories and by chemical, food and beverage, appliance, and packaging companies, among others. The single-use style is often used in the pharmaceutical and medical markets for disposable tubing assemblies. Styles include adapters, straight connectors, Ys, tees, 4-way connectors, elbows, reducers, and hose nipples. Each plastic material also provides specific features. Nylon resists physical stress and abrasion; polyethylene performs better at low temperatures than other plastics; PVDF handles higher temperatures and pressures well; polypropylene is solvent and chemical resistant. The single-use Thermobarb is manufactured from FDA-approved polypropylene and meets USP Class VI and RoHS standards, is sterilizable by autoclave or gamma radiation, and is free of animal-derived ingredients.
